How chain specifications are analyzed:

bulletThe first digit is the distance between link pins (pitch), in eighths of an inch. so a 4xx series chain has 1/2 inch between link pins, a 5xx series chain has 5/8 inch between link pins, a 6xx series chain has 3/4 inch between link pins.
bulletThe next two digits denote the width of the rollers (or distance between two inner links), in eightieths of an inch. A 420 would therefore have 20/80 or 1/4 inch roller widths....a 520 would be the same. A 525 would have 25/80 or 5/16 inch roller width, a 530 would have 30/80 or 3/8 inch roller width.
bullet428 and 532 chains are somewhat oddball in that the 428 has larger roller diameters than a 420, and a 532 chain has larger roller diameters than the other 5xx series chains (520, 525, 530, all have the same roller diameters).
